WATCH: Big Tobacco’s Victory Press Conference (Saunders Cartoon)

Editors’ note: Mother Jones illustrator Zina Saunders creates editorial animations riffing on the political news and current events of the week. In August, five of the largest tobacco companies joined together in a lawsuit to block the FDA from requiring graphic warning labels on cigarettes that show the health consequences of smoking. Last week, Federal District Court Judge Richard Leon gave them their wish, deciding that such warnings infringe on the First Amendment rights of tobacco companies. As always, that’s Zina Saunders doing her own voice work. Also read: The Graphic Warnings Labels That Big Tobacco Squelched (Slideshow)

FACT:

Mother Jones was founded as a nonprofit in 1976 because we knew corporations and the wealthy wouldn't fund the type of hard-hitting journalism we set out to do.

Today, reader support makes up about two-thirds of our budget, allows us to dig deep on stories that matter, and lets us keep our reporting free for everyone. If you value what you get from Mother Jones, please join us with a tax-deductible donation today so we can keep on doing the type of journalism 2020 demands.
