It wasn’t around long, but in its short life, the Twitter feed for “The California Republican”—an alternative “news” site paid for by Devin Nunes Campaign Committee that lambasts the mainstream media and pushes GOP-friendly stories—blistered social media with some serious swings and misses. Presumably all in an effort to win over constituents in the beleaguered congressman’s home district, the Twitter feed employed the hashtag #LockHerUp, and railed against immigrants. It told the LGBT community that Republicans don’t care about them, and it retweeted the conspiracy theorist Alex Jones of InfoWars. It sent out a Tweet suggesting that male privilege does not exist, by cataloguing the many ways in which men ostensibly have it harder than women. And then this week, what was formerly known as @CaRepublicanCom went dark.

Before it did, we got some screenshots of a few of its worst takes:

DONALD TRUMP & DEMOCRACY

Mother Jones was founded to do journalism differently. We stand for justice and democracy. We reject false equivalence. We go after stories others don’t. We’re a nonprofit newsroom, because the kind of truth-telling investigations we do doesn’t happen under corporate ownership.

And we need your support like never before, to fight back against the existential threats American democracy faces. Fundraising for nonprofit media is always a challenge, and we need all hands on deck right now. We have no cushion; we leave it all on the field.

It’s reader support that enables Mother Jones to report the facts that are too difficult, expensive, or inconvenient for other news outlets to uncover. Please help with a donation today if you can—even a few bucks will make a real difference. A monthly gift would be incredible.
