Demonstrating the degree to which Hyde has remained unscathed by the FDIC lawsuit, Kate O’Beirne, National Review’s Washington editor, proposes in the November 25 issue that Hyde take over for Newt Gingrich as “Caretaker Speaker” while Newt lays low and shakes off his ethics charges. O’Beirne goes on to say that Hyde would give the House Republicans an “erudite and genial” face and that it would be impossible to portray Hyde as “either an ideological zealot or a wild-eyed partisan seeking the President’s ruin through the investigation of his scandals.” Sure, but he’s being sued by the Federal government. Is anyone in Washington paying attention?
