Media Rebukes Trump’s Stunning Defense of White Nationalists After Charlottesville

I’m sensing a pattern.

In less than one week, President Donald Trump has drawn fierce, bipartisan condemnation for all but defending white nationalists behind the violent clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia. He has promoted an image of a speeding train striking a CNN reporter, just days after Heather Heyer was killed by a white supremacist driving through a crowd of counter-protesters. On Thursday, he criticized the renewed movement to remove Confederate statues from public spaces.

There seems to be a pattern here.

Below is the newest cover of the Economist, paired with an editorial describing Trump as “inept” and “morally barren” to serve as president. Trump appears to be amplifying his words with a megaphone shaped like a KKK hood.

The New Yorker on Thursday unveiled its latest cover illustration featuring the president blowing into the sail of a KKK hood.

The scathing covers follows similar denunciations from the New York Post and the Daily News earlier this week. The word “Nazi” is included in both.

Here’s a cartoon printed in the Guardian commenting on Trump’s reluctance to forcefully reject hate groups. The White House is topped with a KKK hood.

In the cacophony of voices offering opinions and insights on what has been going on, sometimes pictures really are worth a thousand words.

SIX TRUTHS

Reclaiming power from those who abuse it often starts with telling the truth. And in "This Is How Authoritarians Get Defeated," MoJo's Monika Bauerlein unpacks six truths to remember during the homestretch of an election where democracy, truth, and decency are on the line.

Truth #1: The chaos is the point.

Truth #2: Team Reality is bigger than it seems.

Truth #3: Facebook owns this.

Truth #4: When we go to work, we're in the fight.

Truth #5: It's about minority rule.

Truth #6: The only thing that can save us is…us.

Please take a moment to see how all these truths add up, because what happens in the weeks and months ahead will reverberate for at least a generation and we better be prepared.

And if you think journalism like Mother Jones'—that calls it like it is, that will never acquiesce to power, that looks where others don't—can help guide us through this historic, high-stakes moment, and you're able to right now, please help us reach our $350,000 goal by October 31 with a donation today. It's all hands on deck for democracy.
