Chart of the Day: The Killing Fields

Via Ezra Klein, here’s an estimate from the Institute of Medicine of how many people die each year because they lack health insurance.  The number goes up every year as the population increases and the percentage of people covered by health insurance decreases, so it’s probably up to around 25,000 this year.  Seems like we ought to do something about this, doesn’t it?

WE'LL BE BLUNT:

We need to start raising significantly more in donations from our online community of readers, especially from those who read Mother Jones regularly but have never decided to pitch in because you figured others always will. Despite the challenges, we're optimistic we can increase the share of online readers who decide to donate—starting with hitting an ambitious $300,000 goal in just three weeks to make sure we can finish our fiscal year break-even in the coming months.
