Today, the health care reform bill gets a big shot in the arm: Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), the highly principled progressive voice, is flipping and coming out for the bill. The Dems’ big problem has been progressives like him, who understand that single-payer Medicare for all is the only real way to fix the health care mess in the US, and who might not support the bill as it has evolved. It is a messy bill that grants way too many compromises with the prevailing power structure. But it will insure 30 million people and end awful practices like the denial of care for “preexisting” conditions. Kucinich clears the way for realpolitik: to get what’s possible now, leaving more progress for the next round. That’s kind of progressive.

The right sees this happening and is losing it big-time. Frustrated at losing this debate, the right has decided to attack this little boy, Marcelas Owens, showing their true colors. Another “Have you, at long last, no decency at all?” moment. It’s good to see them hanging out in there public like this: hating America. The truth is a good thing.

December is make or break for us. A full one-third of our annual fundraising comes in this month alone. A strong December means our newsroom is on the beat and reporting at full strength. A weak one means budget cuts and hard choices ahead.

The December 31 deadline is closing in fast. To reach our $400,000 goal, we need readers who’ve never given before to join the ranks of MoJo donors. And we need our steadfast supporters to give again today—any amount.

Managing an independent, nonprofit newsroom is staggeringly hard. There’s no cushion in our budget—no backup revenue, no corporate safety net. We can’t afford to fall short, and we can’t rely on corporations or deep-pocketed interests to fund the fierce, investigative journalism Mother Jones exists to do.

That’s why we need you right now. Please chip in to help close the gap.
