Stereolab’s Former Lead Singer Has a New Album That’s Dreamy and Arresting

Laetitia Sadier mixes electronica, samba, easy listening, and lush vocal harmonies.

As lead singer of the French-British band Stereolab, and more recently on her own, Laetitia Sadier has specialized in an enticing blend of sounds, mixing electronica, samba, easy listening, and lush vocal harmonies into one dreamy yet arresting brew. The effervescent first album by Laetitia Sadier Source Ensemble, Finding Me Finding You echoes everything from Astrud Gilberto to the Beach Boys to Mantovani, while her lyrics continue to address the political complications of subjects both personal and societal. “Love Captive,” a duet with Hot Chip”s Alexis Taylor, confronts the pitfalls of exclusive relationships, asking, “Why make promises of eternity?,” while “The Woman with the Invisible Necklace” ponders the double burden of obsessive consumerism and totalitarianism. As always, Sadier’s effortless grace suggests everything will somehow turn out fine, whatever troubles arise.
